Salt And Pepper Shakers Collection

Collectible salt and pepper shakers picture

Salt and pepper shakers may not mean much to some folks. They just regard them as practical items you put in the kitchen or on the table to add spice and enhance the taste of your food. However, to those that collect them, they are gold. Especially antique or vintage salt and pepper shakers. I discovered that when my great uncle passed away recently and we had to sort through all of his possessions.

I loved my uncle, but he was definitely what you might call a pack rat. He kept just about anything; every knick-knack, doodad, and gadget that he ever lay his hands on. This was a real problem when we had to go through his house. My sister and I had to spend weeks and weeks going from room to room, just to inventory all of his stuff.

Among the things he collected were sets of salt and pepper shakers, and oddly enough, those were some of the hardest to deal with. He had every conceivable salt and pepper shaker that you can think of in all materials, sizes, and colors. From stainless steel to wooden, from glass and crystal, to ceramic pepper salt shakers, he had them all. There were large and mini salt and pepper shakers in black, red, and orange in his collection. Have you ever seen old classic TV themed salt and pepper shakers? He had them in "I Love Lucy" and "I Dream of Genie". The funny thing is, he wasn't really into cooking.

Rummaging through his "collectables" we found some salt and pepper shakers of Russian literature. However, some of them appeared to be of questionable origin, not to mention the quality, that I wouldn't be surprised if he actually made them himself. Knowing my uncle, he probably did. We also dug out some holiday themed ones such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas pepper salt shakers. Some of these salt and pepper shakers were in animal forms like black cat, rooster, turkey, turtle, pig, and frog.

He even had a few modern pepper salt shakers that we keep for ourselves, but most of the old salt and pepper shakers are junk to us. However, as you know, one man's junk is another man's treasure. I mean a salt shaker could be sitting on a shelf in an antique store for years gathering dust. Then one day a collector could come along and be willing to pay a good 50 dollars or so for it. Now when you have hundreds of salt and pepper shakers, some of which are more than a century old, there are bound to be a few collectables among them. That's why we had a hard time deciding what to do with them.

Looking for antique stores to sell the unique pepper salt shaker was always hit or miss. So, finally we decided to sell them on eBay. It's the very best way to get exposure, no matter what you happen to be selling. Imagine people from around the world having access to your items. Certainly some folks are bound to search for and find our collectible salt and pepper shakers on eBay. It turned out to work better than our other options. You would not believe how many people are out there looking for antique salt and pepper shakers. As an added bonus, we did not have to give the antique shop a big cut of the profits.
