Since banks were non existent especially during ancient times, collecting them seemed to be a practical way to store them. Because of public health concerns, the New York legislature nearly passed a bill in 1993 which would prohibit lead in miniatures. When miniature manufacturers realized that more states were likely to outlaw their products, many began making products without lead, but these new products were often more expensive than their predecessors.

Following almost a year of public discussion, including complaints from miniature makers and devotees, Governor Mario Cuomo signed the bill which declared that miniatures were not subject to the state’s Public Health Law. The manufacturers in the United States continue to use alloys without lead in them in spite of this.

Manufacturers have them available in a variety of types of plastics.

Painting: When playing role playing games and war games, gamers often paint their mini-figurines so that they are able to tell the difference between the characters on whatever surface they are playing on.

Some gamers believe the skillful painting of minis is a hobby on par with the “more serious” modeling of historical and military figures while many others care little about the quality of the paint job. The skill of mini painting is hard, tedious, and takes a lot of time, but can have quite amazing results.

Miniature painting competitions exist at wargaming conventions, however, more and more are becoming prevalent online.

I have met a number of people who are having trouble with cleaning their mirrors that have become cloudy and today I want to try and help you in that regard.

Let us say you own a full length mirror and is tarnished and cloudy well take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. I have been there; I can bet that you neighbour has owned one too. I tried everything I could to clean it until I got rid of it only to discover the best cleaning methods months after I had gotten rid of it.

Now what if you do not want to replace it for one reason or the other? Is there really a way to clean it? As a decorative mirrors specialist I know a few tricks on how you can do this effectively. You can use these suggestions for a variety of mirrors including large, oversized, compact, framed, unframed or even full body length mirrors.

The most obvious way is to clean them with water. Just warm the water or even to boil and then try to clean it. Keep the water pure i.e. without adding any additives. If you own plexy glass then you can be sure this will work pretty well.

Vinegar and a newspaper can work well too. I mean it could be that someone once tried to clean it with something that was oily.

Another alternative is to use spray cleaners like Windex or something similar. One thing I must mention here is that spray cleaners are good for some decorative bathroom mirror and not for others. So you should not despair if that particular spray does not work on your mirror.

If you are having difficulty with having them clean by using any of my recommendations, then probably there are other reasons why it is cloudy. Maybe the problem is with the silver on the back of the mirror i.e it could be peeling off. This could be a cause to get rid of it but if you really can’t then try to get it re-slivered.

Joshua Lionel Cowen of the now iconic Lionel Trains was born in 1877 to Jewish immigrants. He came to America, landing in New York with his family just after the Civil War. This was a time of change for everyone, including Cowen, not just with emigrating to the United States, but it was the time of the industrial revolution. Edison had just created the electric light and trains signaled the progress of change. The west and east were finally connected in America via the Central and Union Pacific railroads, this led to a sense of expansion, optimism and exciting possibilities for some. It made sense that Cowen would become an inventor after growing up in the time of such industrial changes and transitions. As a college drop out, he had been quite productive, being credited around the turn of the century with some notable inventions, including the flashlight, and a patent for a device used to ignite the photographic flash of a camera.

It’s rumored that Lionel Cowen made his first toy train before the age of ten. He carved a small train out of wood and fixed a small steam engine to it. Unfortunately, his parents kitchen was damaged when the steam exploded the engine. Despite this exploding mishap, Cowen was undeterred and eventually founded the Lionel Corporation around the turn of the century. This was the time when passenger rail travel was fascinating and cutting edge. The then modern technology enchanted adults and children alike.

The first successful Lionel train was the Electric Express. Ironically this train was not designed   to be a toy or something for hobbyist. Its intended purpose was that of a store display gimmick. As a flat gondola train carrying featured merchandise around circular track in a store display window, the Electric Express simultaneously succeeded and failed. No one paid any attention to the contents of the display train, instead the electric train itself generated all the interest and many request to purchase it. Lionel Cowen took notice of this and focused Lionel Corporation on what we know and love them for, model trains.
